Damien Treutenaere
Skipper and Sailing Instructor
After several sailing experiences in Norway and on the East coast of Greenland, the call of the ice remained and Damien joined the Karukinka association as skipper of the “North Cape – Cape Horn” project carried out between 2023 and 2025. And as adventure is addictive within our association, he and Lauriane, his first mate, sail through the remote and cool regions of both hemispheres.
He holds a Captain 200 Sail certificate (2007) and a BEES sailing degree 1st level (2004). His skills are complemented by those acquired during his previous activities as a farmer in aquaculture and fish farming in Scotland and Ireland.
In parallel with deliveries in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Atlantic, … he has been teaching sailing with patience and pedagogy for 20 years and is also a trainer in maritime centers and supervisor of sailors, captain 200 sail and BP cruising.
Lauriane Lemasson
Founder and First Mate
Researcher (geography, ethnology and acoustics), sound recorder, photographer, lecturer, accordionist, mechanic (Merchant Marine)… Lauriane is versatile and passionate about the extreme south of Patagonia, which led her to found the Karukinka association.
She works with indigenous populations of southern Patagonia and has led several scientific expeditions on land and water since 2013, including one under UNESCO auspices for several months in 2018 (Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve in autumn-winter). In 2021 she designed the sailing “North Cape – Cape Horn” project and obtained support from the Ministry of Culture (New Worlds).
She publishes articles, exhibits her photos and sounds, gives scientific and public lectures (Europe, Canada, Latin America, Russia) and regularly appears in national and international media (e.g.: Géo magazine, France Culture, Libération newspaper, France Musique, Les Baladeurs podcasts,…).
José German González Calderón
Yaghan Fisherman and Craftsman
Originally from Puerto Williams and with decades of professional navigation in the Patagonian channels as a fishing captain (holder of Chilean titles of Patrón de Nave Menor and Patrón de Pesca artesanal), José German sails with us and is one of the main actors in our projects, including the recreation of Yagan territory maps in the language of his ancestors and work in archives concerning his people that are present in Europe (cf. “Haizebegi” and “Voices of the Grandmothers” projects).
Former president of the Yagan community of Mejillones Bay (Chile) and fervent defender of the rights of his people and his family on land and sea, he is an honorary member of our association and godfather of our vessel, alongside Mirtha Salamanca (of the Selk’nam people).
Sébastien Pons
Sailor and Secretary
A geologist-volcanologist by training (ENS-Orsay), Sébastien is secretary of the association and has been passionate since his youngest age about exploration stories, the history of polar expeditions and more broadly adventures combining sea and mountain.
Regularly on the water as part of his professional activities, he holds the CFBS and, whenever he can, joins us to explore the Patagonian channels and refine our knowledge of Yagan culture and the settlement dynamics of this immense island region extending to Cape Horn.
Finally, his in-depth knowledge of mountains, his living environment, and his practice of completely autonomous trekking in many countries (Chile, Argentina, Canada, Indonesia, Iceland,…) make him a choice companion during land activities.

Jacques Sax
President of the Association
A known name in sound in cinema industry and creator of Sonosax, Jacques is also a sailor with an impressive number of nautical miles to his credit. Lake Geneva having become too small for his escapist desires, he fell in love with more distant destinations: Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Caribbean, Philippines, Thailand, Argentina… Always making sailing rhyme with conviviality!
Cyrielle Lemasson
Vice President
A therapist and passionate about Celtic culture stories, she is also keen on DIY, painting, drawing, cooking,… not hesitating to give big helping hands within the association for all events taking place in France.
At the sailing level, she is an active crew member, always ready to participate in maneuvers and to put on fins, mask and snorkel to go marvel at life below the surface!
Marie-Pierre Lemasson
Treasurer
One of the pillars since the origins of the association, she is also a recovery specialist and the host of our meetings and projects as during Haizebegi 2019.
With her hand on her heart and committed to making things happen (logistics, management…), she thirsts to discover and learn new things. Her motivation was also strongly strengthened by her meeting with Mirtha and José, honorary members of the association.
